Creative Ways to Make Spelling Fun!
I caen’t spwell. đ Spelling has always been a big struggle for me, so I want better for my kiddoes. Drilling spelling words and practicing to become strong spellers don’t seem to work well for said kiddoes, however!
They always want to have fun, and writing out spelling words over and over isn’t always very much fun. With a little bit of creativity, we have found creative ways to make spelling fun!
Shoot it Spelling
This fun game can add a flare of fun to a spelling list. Using strips of lined paper have your child write spelling words on the front and back. Once finished with a strip, have them crumple the paper up into a ball and SHOOT it into a trash can, large cooking pot, or laundry basket nearby. For every shot they make, they get a point towards a reward.
The more spelling words they write, the more points they can earn. Make the reward worth it so they are begging you to spell so they can get closer to the reward! If you have younger students you may want the reward to be something small (like a small treat, sticker, or toy) so that the instant reward makes them want to play spelling again!
Snow Ball Fight
This game works perfectly if you have more than one child needing to write spelling words. If you have only one speller, then you will need to play too. Using lined strips of paper have your child write spelling words on the front and the back. Once finished and checked they can crumple each strip into a “snowball.”
You can set a timer or have them write a required word list. Each correct page = more ammunition. đ At the end of your spelling time, allow your children to have a snowball fight with their papers! Or, if it would be more fun for your child, allow them to pelt you with their snowballs. Play it up and make them laugh! They may even beg you to do spelling the next day.
Fun Utensils
Who said spelling had to be done in pencil? Let them use fun, colorful pens, pencils, crayons, markers or whatever they choose! Sometimes something as simple as a sparkly gel pen can make the dread of spelling dissipate. There is plenty of room to be creative here too!
You could take spelling outside for the day. Allow your children to use sidewalk chalk, paintbrushes and water, or a stick in the sand or mud to write their spelling words. One day we made our own ink and allowed the kids to spell using a feather dipped in the mixture. They had a blast!
Make it a Race
This one is self-explanatory. Set a timer and see how many spelling words they can write correctly in a given amount of time. Start out with small increments and work your way up as they become used to this game. Two minutes of spelling can easily turn into ten minutes in a week or so. Remeber to praise them for their efforts and reward as necessary.
Kid’s Choice
Children like being a part of the decision making too. Give them spelling options! Write a list of the options above or any other fun spelling games you come up with! Let your child choose one each day for spelling. These are so simple, and they have the potential to make learning so much more enjoyable for your kiddoes!
What creative ways do you use to make spelling fun? đ
