Homemaking Hacks for Overwhelmed Moms
Some of us are born decent homemakers. My daughter LOVES to clean. She begged me to do the dishes today at only 6 years old. (Yes. I am serious.) She makes her bed every chance she gets, even though she has never been taught how to. That gene may have skipped a few generations.
If you have a home, you are a homemaker whether you are good at it or not. If you are a full-time homeschooling mom, or if you work full time outside of your home there is still a home to be made.
Here are my best homemaking hacks that can lighten your load a bit if you are exhausted or overwhelmed (or both!).
Dish Soap Squirter
You know those peri bottles they give you to clean all the important/swollen parts after childbirth? These make excellent dish soap holders. Being able to squirt the soap right away even if you have a baby in your arms (read- one-handed dish scrubbing made easy!) is a must for busy moms.
If you don’t have a peri bottle left over, grab a new one for all your dish soap dispensing needs!
30 Seconds to Clean Microwave
I loathe dirty microwaves. Seriously cooked on food particles is just so, so gross. But that said grossness can be super tough to scrub. Ain’t no busy mom got time for that!
A simple solution to this is to microwave a cup of vinegar for 30 seconds – 1 minute. If you can smell the vinegar in the air, you know it has been long enough. Then wipe down the inside of the microwave! The vinegar makes all those tough food particles slide right off. You will have a sparkling clean microwave in no time!

DIY All Purpose Cleaner
We love natural cleaners, but with messy toddlers, you need something that will clean and disinfect in a snap! The all-purpose cleaner we have used and loved for years we make ourselves. I don’t have time for complicated soap making, so this one is super simple.
I use a large empty spray bottle, squirt a few squirts of Castle Soap (peppermint is our favorite), fill up the rest of the bottle with water and voila! A great natural all-purpose cleaner that even the kids can use for wiping and cleaning. The best part is one large bottle of Castle Soap can be used for cleaning and for washing kiddoes in the tub. One bottle lasts us all year!
Laundry Detergent for Pennies
I make our own laundry detergent. It costs just a few dollars per year (yes you read that right!). We make it about once a year in a large 5-gallon bucket and it lasts for an entire year! You might have heard about this before, but if you haven’t tried it yet – today is the day!
Simply shred a bar of Fels Naptha soap with a cheese grater. Boil a pot of water on the stove to melt the soap shards. Add 1 cup of washing soda and 1/2 cup Borax to the pot. Pour into your five-gallon bucket and fill to the brim with warm tap water. Add some drops of your favorite essential oil. Stir the mixture and let it sit overnight. Use 2 – 3 TBS of this concentrated laundry soap in each load.
