Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe
Have you ever wondered what kind of chemicals are in regular, store bought baby wipes? Are they really that bad? Some of them contain chemicals like phthalates and parabens which we have decent research linking them with some yucky things (like cancer and other adverse health effects). I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like something I want to rub all over my child!
My kids tend to have sensitive skin, especially when they are first born. So I have to be careful with the detergents we use on their tiny clothes and the soaps we use on their sweet skin. There are lots of great companies that make wipes that leave out the harsh chemicals. Lots of brands like 7th Generation, Honest Company, and Water Wipes make wonderful, natural wipes without these chemicals, but they are more expensive.but I have found them to be significantly more expensive. I want what’s best for my babies, but I don’t want to sacrifice our bank account in the process. (Unless it is necessary of course!)
The Simple Solution: Make your own baby wipes, naturally, at a fraction of the cost! That sounds like a win-win solution to me! I have tried a few recipes for making my own wipes, and this is by far my favorite. It is SO easy, even an Outmatched Mama can handle it! 😉
Step 1: Cloth or Disposable?
First you will need to decide if you want to make reusable cloth wipes or disposable wipes. Cloth wipes can be washed with cloth diapers, and reused. If you prefer cloth, decide if you want to keep them in the wipe solution, or leave them dry and spray them to wet before a diaper change. If you keep them wet, you will have to make this every 2 – 3 days. I have used this recipe to make both!
Step 2: Obtain Supplies
What you will need:
A Tupperware container
A roll of paper towels OR small washcloths
Natural baby soap – I prefer Lavender Castle Soap. It is free of yucky chemicals, a little bit goes a long way, it has tons of uses, and can be bought in bulk to make it even more frugal!
Coconut oil
A small squirt bottle – If you are going to do cloth, I personally prefer the wet right before diaper change method.
Step 3: Make Your Wipes
Mix together: 2 cups water
1 Heaping Tbs coconut oil
1 Tbs Castle soap (or your natural baby soap of choice)
Then heat it in a sauce pan over medium heat for a few minutes until it is warm. While it is heating, chop your paper towel roll in half with a large serrated knife. If you are making disposable wipes. Pull out the center tube, and put the paper towel roll or the small washcloths into the container. Pour the solution over your paper towel roll or cloth washclothes OR put the solution into a spray bottle and wet a cloth wipe as you need it. Let them set for a few hours to soak in all the sweet smelling, natural goodness and WAALAA! Wonderful, frugal baby wipes! 🙂
