Keeping Christ at the Center of Your Charlotte Mason Homeschool
Have you ever had a rough homeschool day where everything was going wrong? So, you decided it was time to call it quits for the day? Even though one or two (or more) subjects were left undone? I have! The subject we should not leave undone is our Bible/Bible History lessons. It makes me think of a song: “Jesus at the center of it all!” But, how exactly do we make Jesus the center of our Charlotte Mason homeschool? Here are a few tips to keep Christ at the center of your Charlotte Mason homeschool.Christ-Centered Curriculum
This is not hard to come by in the Charlotte Mason homeschooling world. Since Charlotte Mason knew the importance of Christ at the center. We use A Gentle Feast curriculum in our home. (Read more about A Gentle Feast here.) A Gentle Feast is the very definition of a “Christ-centered curriculum.” From the start to the end of the day, Christ is woven throughout each lesson. Morning Time
In A Gentle Feast, we have a morning time routine. It starts off with Bible. Then we move to Bible Memory and Hymn Study. Some days other subjects are rotated in the place of hymn study. Having Bible and Bible Memory first in our day really makes a difference. I find my kids going around quoting their scripture throughout the day, or even singing their hymns. Setting that mood for the rest of our day is fantastic! Just this week we were working on our memory scripture“If God be for us, who can be against us.” (Romans 8:31)During History, we were able to relate back to that scripture in a story about someone who trusted in God and won his battle.
Letting the Holy Spirit Guide You
Yes. I left this for last, but it is most definitely not the least! It is so important to let the Holy Spirit lead and guide in all aspects of our lives. Why should our children’s education be any different? Charlotte Mason’s 20th principle in Volume 6, A Philosophy of Education says this:We allow no separation to grow up between the intellectual and ‘spiritual’ life of children, but teach them that the Divine Spirit has constant access to their spirits, and is their Continual Helper in all the interests, duties, and joys of life. The Holy Spirit can not only help your children with school, but it can also help you as a homeschool parent. The Bible tells us that God is our help and he will not allow us to slip. (Psalm 121:2-3) We don’t have to feel like the weight of our child’s education is all dependent on us. Pray and let God lead you throughout your homeschool days. It will make your days go so much more smoothly, and there will be peace in your homeschool.
Remember this!
All these things that I mentioned might seem super simple, but they are beneficial for your homeschool. It doesn’t have to be hard to put Christ at the center of your Charlotte Mason homeschool. Put Christ first, and everything else will fall into place. Thank goodness I don't have to do this in my own strength! (2 Corinthians 12:9)
I am so glad you are here! 🙂
