Your mind might actually be blown because this recipe requires so few ingredients. I bet if you walk over to your pantry right now, you’d be able to pull out all of the needed ingredients.
Baking soda – You might have an old container of baking soda, but that’s okay, you can still use it. The starting ingredient in this fun craft/recipe is baking soda. It’s an inexpensive ingredient to have on hand for this type of stuff.
Cornstarch – I try and pick up cornstarch when it’s on sale because I know it can be a little more expensive. However, cornstarch is a great thing to have when you want to do some fun experiments with the kids.
Water – Now, this is the best ingredient because it’s free and so easy to find. You can use any kind of water in this recipe too! What I mean is you can use bottled water or tap water and it would turn out okay. 😉
Now that you know the ingredients, it’s time to break down how to make this super fantastic Air Dry Clay!
How to Make This Air Dry Clay Recipe for Kids
I’m excited to tell you all how to make this air dry clay because I know your kiddoes will love it. Let’s go through this step by step.
Step One: Take a small pot, and add the baking soda and cornstarch to the pot. You’re going to end up mixing the cornstarch and baking soda together and you’ll mix it together until it’s all the way blended.
Step Two: You will pour in the water, and start to cook the pot over medium heat. You’ll also need to stir constantly for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep this up until the clay begins to form.
Step Three: Then remove the mixture from the heat and keep stirring until it becomes a kind of sticky but also soft dough. You’ll understand this consistency because it won’t stick to your hands completely.
Step Four: You don’t want hot dough. Go ahead and allow the dough to cool to the touch. You don’t want to burn yourself or your budding artists!
Step Five: Next you’ll place the dough on a surface coated with even more cornstarch. Start kneading the clay and add more cornstarch as you need. You’ll do this until the clay becomes smooth and the tacky feeling of the dough is gone.
Step Six: Want to store this air dry clay? You can wrap it in a plastic wrap, or you can also place it in an airtight container.
Step Seven: When you are ready to use it, your kiddoes can form it into various shapes. When they are done making clay creations, place their final artwork on a drying rack. It is a good idea to flip shapes over after one side has dried. Also, depending on the thickness of the object, the clay can actually take up to 72 hours to dry completely.
The next time you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the kids, give this Air Dry Clay a try. I think you’ll love the consistency of it. The kids will play with it for hours and be thrilled that their artwork will dry and last!
