Before you can truly fall in love with someone, you have to have met them. You can’t be in love with someone whom you don’t know anything about, right?
How then can we teach our children to love the world, like Christ loves the world, if they have never experienced her beauty, tasted her food, or met her people – a people made in the image of God himself?
I want my children to have a love for all peoples God created, regardless of how different they seem from us. It is these people that Jesus Christ came to bring salvation to. The gospel message transcends any boundary that race, social status, or cultural norms would divide.
I wish I could rally my tribe of littles, hop on an airplane, and let them experience all that this world has to offer in person. I would love for them (and myself!) to touch, taste, and experience all of these diverse cultures. But in this season of life, that is simply not feasible for our family.
What can a mother do to instill a Christ like love for the world in her children? How can a momma raise global hearted, mission minded children when making it to the grocery store and back leaves her completely outmatched? I need this be done from the comfort of my couch please!?!
ENTER the power of the story! A well written tale allows you travel the world with your children without leaving your home (other than a quick library trip of course!) You can walk through the grassy plains of Africa or feel the salty breeze of the ocean right alongside a character in a story.
But I know what you are thinking. How on earth am I going to find great books that will teach my children these important truths? How does anyone have time to find them and screen them for their children?
Goodnews! Jamie C. Martin has done all the tough work for you. She has compiled a wonderful list of books that will help you introduce your child to the peoples of the world in her book, “Give Your Child the World: Raising globally minded children one book at a time.”
The booklists are separated by continent, and each geographical section is further divided into appropriate age range stories. Jamie also gives a brief description of the story, letting you know what the story is about and if anything concerning is in the story (all prescreened for you!!).
“Give Your Child the World” is a resource that can be used to expound upon any geography, history, or cultural study. It is a wealth of knowledge that saves the homeschooling mom or parent tons of time!
You can choose the region you would like to learn about, decide the appropriate age range for you kids and have a list of great stories right at your fingertips. Jamie’s family is very culturally diverse (she describes it as a mini United Nations!) She gives wonderful ideas about creating a globally minded family dynamic. All this allows you to travel around the globe all while snuggled with your babies!
Furthermore, the book is something I personally go back to again and again when my children ask questions about what life is like for people who live in a particular area we are learning about. I love that my young children know that life is different for children all around the world, and I love that this book gives me the tools I need to answer their questions. We all learn together as a family!
As we read through the stories contained in this amazing resource, we are compiling a list of places we would love to visit and see firsthand someday. But for now, my children go around telling relatives what life is like in Europe and Africa like they have been there, having experienced it through the stories Jamie recommends. 🙂
You can order the book here. (It sells for much less than it should. This resource is seriously worth it’s weight in gold!) Give Your Child the World
The audio book can be found here. Give Your Child the World – Audio
Not convinced? 😉 You can hear Jamie talk about the book on the Reading Revival podcast here.
P.S. I am not affiliated with simple homeschool.net, I just LOVE this book and want to shout it from the rooftops so other outmatched mamas can use it! 🙂
Stop what you are doing and check out this book!! 🙂
