The day my daughter cut me with a knife – Knife Skills for Kids
The shine of a blade being pulled from its wooden resting place resonates through the house. My body freezes. It’s just me and the kids home today, so who has a knife!?
Suddenly, I can’t get to the kitchen the fast enough!
Not just any knife, but a sharp steak knife. The kind I chop vegetables with.
“Aria drop that!” I shout before I have time to think. But as any parent of a strong-willed preschooler knows, she clung on tighter and her stance became still and defiant. The war was waging in her eyes. The battle lines were voraciously drawn.
I rush to her side, and as her little hand reaches to grab the blade, I put my hand in her place. She squeezes her fist and I feel the sharp sting dig into my hand. Thick sticky blood drips from my hand to hers and onto the counter. I wince at the pain.
We both let out a shriek and she retracts her hand to cover her agape mouth in horror.
I take a deep breath, put pressure on my wound, and say through gritted teeth: “You cut mommy, Aria. I didn’t want you to play with a knife because they are sharp and can cut you like THIS and make you bleed.” I choke out the words as I press a paper towel to my sliced hand.
She bursts into tears and apologizes over and over. Come to find out she was trying to help me make lunch. I had told her we were making a salad, and she was determined to help me cut the vegetables.
I held my little sweet helper and assured her of forgiveness even though my hand was throbbing. The thoughts rushed through my head.
Maybe I should teach her how to use a knife. Does anyone let their 3 year olds use knives? Well, she is using them anyway! Ha! Ouch…maybe if she knew some ground rules she would remember how to be safe when using a knife. My mother is going to think I have lost my mind!
“Would you like to learn how to use a knife, safely?” I ask. Her little tear soaked cheeks look up at me and she nods her head. She wants to use knives without spilling her blood on the countertop.
I google something like “knife skills for kids” and stumble across a free video series teaching young ones how to cut food safely
Limited Time Freebie: Knife Skills for Kids HERE!
So we start. We watch the videos together and it teaches me too!
I let her chop soft bananas and soft potatoes with a butter knife. She learns to spread peanut butter and slice a sandwich in two.
These videos propel her into becoming my diligent, daily lunch helper. Eventually, when she gets all of the techniques down, I let her use the sharp knife to cut bell peppers.
Yesterday, at the age of 5 years, I let her make a salad with the sharp knife all by herself.
She was thrilled, I was thrilled, and I didn’t have to make lunch! (Whoo hoo!!)
She still remembers the day she cut me with a knife, and we both laugh about it now. I am so thankful for Katie’s knife skills class! (Check out the knife skills class FREE for a limited time! Your hands will thank me 😉 )
