5 Activites to Wear Out the Toddler
Sour, sweet, gone ….on to destroy the next priceless treasure lying in wait for the toddler tornado. Oh those sweet, adorable, incredibly destructive little ones! I am constantly looking for creative ways to use up all of the toddler energy that comes jam-packed in those little bodies, for GOOD instead of destruction.
Our third born is incredibly filled with get up and go that is bursting at the seams and forever ready to dump someone’s precious craft into the toilet, write all over the walls in sharpie, or find all the sharpest deadliest objects we own. These are some of the best ways I have found to wear down the rambunctious energy, so the sweet cuddly compliant little one can be reached! 😉
1) Fresh Air
Ahh, there is something about being outside in the great big world that wears our tiny tots out. If your toddler has built up energy to burn (you can tell how much excess energy they have by how much of your house has been destroyed 😉 ) take them outside for a walk or a romp at the park. You could color with sidewalk chalk, or hunt for bugs and interesting leaves in the grass. As long as they spend some time breathing in the fresh air, they will be plum tuckered out.
2) Water Play
Nothing wears their energy out faster than the water! Whether you are taking him or her swimming in the pool, or splashing through the sprinkler, playing in the water gets all the energy out of their little bodies. Plus it is tons of fun to be in the water during the summer heat! In the winter “go swimming” in the bathtub. Add some bubbles to blow or pour some bubble bath in to swim through/make bubble castles and hairdos and it’s a party!
3) Chase
Playing chase is a family favorite of ours. It takes one glance of my “I am gonna get you!” look, and they know it is game on! We run through the house and have lots of toddler belly giggles in the process. Play a few rounds of this and tickle when you catch ’em, then let them chase you! Your little ones will nap like champs.

4) Building Games
Something that requires stacking, restocking and problem-solving tends to wear our little ones out. They are working their little motor skills and are using their brainpower to fit the pieces together or to build a tall tower. Any kind of toy that can be pieced together or built will do. We keep a bin of toy trucks that fit inside of each other for our car-obsessed toddler right now. But we have used blocks, Lego Duplos, tangrams, dominoes, Magformers, etc… in the past with success. (Make sure you are supervising so they don’t put any little parts in their mouths!)
5) Fetch
Okay, I said it. We play fetch with our toddlers. Not that I am likening them to puppies, but fetch does wear a little guy or gal out! Roll the ball or the toy car, and tell them to go get it. Once they catch the idea that this is a super fun game, they will play along joyfully. Have older siblings model. Bribe them as necessary 😉
