Gathering together first thing in the morning is one of my favorite things about Homeschooling. Just taking a few minutes each day to connect and spend time going through our morning basket sets the tone for the whole day.
Some of you do a fantastic job of homeschooling across the levels. Your day has all of you in perfect synchrony with each other. {no, actually I don’t believe that} I know it’s tough, and like me, you have your good days and bad. Part of what makes this morning time so important is that it’s the only part of our day that puts us all on the same page. My 15 year old and my 6 year old can both be talking and working through the same thing and I love that!
There are so many resources out there for Morning Basket Time, but today I want to focus on ways that we can use that time to get our day centered on Christ.
First things First:
I know this doesn’t have anything to do with Morning Basket Time, but I do think that we should start each day with a greeting to each of our children. Whenever one of my children emerge from their room in the morning I always greet them with a hug and say “Good Morning ______, I’m so happy to see you today”
I want to have the first words out of my mouth to them be positive. Even if the next words are “Get moving, we overslept and now we are going to be late to co-op!”
Prayer, Always Prayer:
This seems obvious. But some days we are rushed and we don’t do as well as I would like. But wouldn’t it be wonderful for your children to look back on their childhood memories and the one thing they could be sure of is that they lived in a house that believed in prayer?
Pray for the World:
This year we are studying geography and one of the books we are using is Windows to the World. It’s a great book to walk you through information on each country and tells you how to pray for that country.
Pray for your friends and family:
Do you know those fancy picture cards you get from everyone at Christmas? Put them on a ring in your basket and each day pray for one of those families.
Pray for each other:
Take this time to share your praises and struggles with each other.
Sing a Song Unto the Lord
Sometimes I get an eye roll or a groan, but sometimes they are agreeable to a song. Do you have some favorite hymns or is there a praise song that really speaks to your heart? Take some time and just worship the Lord. I know a family that teaches a hymn a week. She introduces the hymn at the beginning of the week and then all week they listen to it and sing it, and even use it for their handwriting practice. So many hymns have such sweet theology that will stick with your children.
Scripture Memory:
I’m just going to be honest right here. For three years we have been trying to memorize the book of James. We have finally made it halfway through chapter 2, but no doubt by now, we could have a few books memorized. Still I think it’s important to spend time memorizing scripture. So whether it’s a verse a week or a book of the bible, Get in God’s word!
Bible Study:
We don’t always do our bible study together during this time. But if gathering everyone together at another part of the day is difficult for you, then make it a priority in your morning time together. If you have older children, put them to the task of sharing a devotion or leading the bible study for everyone.
Read Aloud:
I used to do our read aloud time at lunch but I have found that sometimes if I wait, we don’t always get to it. There are so many books that celebrate godly character traits and give lots of opportunity to talk about difficult subjects. The Lamplighter books and books by Patricia St. John are some of my favorite.
Angel is lover of God, People and Coffee. She is the wife to Steven her wanna be Ninja Warrior husband, mother to her four entertaining children and in her free time can be found…wait… free time??
