Creative Ways to Kill the Handwriting Boredom
You have seen it before. The glazed over eyes, the unfinished handwriting practice page laying on the table sans actual handwriting. I am sure you have heard the continual whining and the “but MOOOOMMSS!” If this sounds all too familiar, you may have a case of the handwriting boredom on your hands.
If you are tired of the unfinished pages and take-all-day handwriting sessions, its time for a bit of creativity. Everything, including handwriting, is better with a little bit of fun sprinkled in! Kill the handwriting boredom with these creative ways to stop that boredom dead in its tracks.
Use Different Utensils
Fun and interesting writing utensils make handwriting much more fun! We try to keep a plethora of fun colorful options to choose from. Everything from crayons, colored pencils, large chunky pencils, markers in different sizes, gel pens, mechanical pencils, regular pencils, and even GLITTER pens can be used for handwriting. Sometimes all it takes is a little pizzaz in your pencil to kill the handwriting boredom.
Use Different Paper
Another way to spice up the handwriting time is different paper options. You can use simple lined paper to help a child know where to write. Colorful paper works great too! Let your artist color a picture of the letters, words, or sentences they are writing on fun paper. Allow your storyteller to dictate or write their own story using the letter, words, or sentences they are practicing. Copywork handwriting passages are great for this!
Or you can find fun handwriting printables online like these Avengers themed handwriting sheets!
Use Different Curriculum
Maybe it is your handwriting curriculum that’s causing the problem. Kill the handwriting boredom by using a different curriculum! Some kid-approved handwriting curriculums to try are the Draw Write Now series and the A Reason for Handwriting Series. Both of my older students loved using these curriculums.
They made handwriting fun since they were able to either practice their drawing skills while writing interesting sentences that went with their picture (Draw Write Now) or were able to write Bible verses and color sweet pictures to mail to their family and friends (A Reason for Handwriting).
Or it may simply be time to ditch the curriculum (gasp! I know. There! I said it.) and have them copy sentences from their favorite book or from the Bible.
Let Them Choose!
Kid’s love feeling like they are a part of the decisions. They are people too after all! Give them all the options above. Once you have explained to them the importance of handwriting and explained their options, let them decide. Change it up from week to week if they’d like a change. BOOM! You no longer have to kill the handwriting boredom! 😉
