It’s fair to say that homeschooling has pros and cons. One of the main issues people have with homeschooling is that they’re worried their kids won’t concentrate when they’re not in a proper school environment. After all, it can be hard enough getting them to focus on ten minutes worth of homework every night, so how will they ever stay focused when being schooled from home?
Saying that, you can try and counter this issue by creating a study room in your home where your children will be taught every day. Basically, you want this room to almost feel like a classroom, and it should be different from the rest of your house. This makes them feel like they’re actually in school rather than just at home, which helps reset their mindset.
Keeping that in mind, here’s a very short guide to help you create the perfect study area:
Renovate a spare room with enough space
Ideally, you want this study area to be in a room that’s separate from your home. For me, the best option is a garage. There’s more than enough space there to put some desks, a whiteboard, and more teaching resources. Plus, it feels like a separate part of your house, which will further help your children get into the mindset of going to school rather than just staying at home. But, renovating an unused attic or spare bedroom could also work, it depends on the space available.
Make the room feel ‘professional’
When I say ‘professional’, I’m talking about the way the place feels in comparison to the rest of your home. Usually, you want your house to feel very homely and comforting. Here, the mood should be more professional and educational. Don’t lay down a fluffy carpet, get some hardwood flooring or a vinyl option instead. Make sure the walls aren’t decorated with cute wallpaper and go for a neutral grey or white option instead. You don’t really want family photos or toys in the room either, as this makes it feel too much like part of your home instead of your homeschool.
Fill it with everything you need to teach your children
Finally, you have to fill this study room with everything you need to teach your kids. Of course, this means getting your hands on some study desks and comfortable chairs for them to sit on (keyword being ‘comfortable’ or else they’ll fidget all the time and get no work done!). Then, think about other teaching material you need like various books – which need a bookcase – a computer or tablet to teach using apps or videos, and possibly even an interactive whiteboard or projector. It sounds expensive, but that’s because homeschooling is a pretty serious financial commitment. But, when you have everything you need all in one room, it means you can teach with fewer disruptions as you won’t have to keep going out and getting things from other rooms in your house.
Don’t worry, you can still homeschool your kids without a dedicated study room. However, if you want them to be as attentive as possible, then this is usually the best way forward. Give it some thought, try it out, and let me know how well it transforms the homeschooling experience for everyone involved.
