Church is something you are, not something you do.
Church is not merely something you attend then, it’s your identity.
According to the Bible, you are a member of the body of Christ. Grafted in through His sacrifice. So – newsflash! YOU CAN’T CLOSE THE CHURCH!
Aren’t you glad? No matter what the government shuts down or what illnesses prevent us from gathering in person for a time, the body of Christ is alive and moving – because your family is. (Can I get an amen!?)
So while our church buildings are closed, you can actively meet together as a body of believers and DO church meetings as a family.
Where to Start
Being the Church at home may seem like a daunting task, but it starts with having simple church meetings. Some may call these meetings “family worship” or “devotion time.”
Whatever you refer to your church gatherings as – a family doing church at home is so much of a sweeter time than simply sitting on your couch and trying to keep the kids from burning the house down while you live-stream a church service.
Unless a sermon is specifically preached for multiple ages, including kids, my children don’t get much out of them. So doing church meetings together for my family has been much more fruitful.
(p.s. keep live streaming your churches!! Just meet as the church with your family too 😉 )
What Does it Look Like?
Doing church as a family doesn’t have to be complicated! We usually gather everyone to a central location – the sofa, the dining room table, a large bean bag all work well. You can even take everyone outside (this might be my favorite <3)
Then open with prayer. The Bible says if two or more are gathered in the name of Jesus, He is there with you. (Matthew 18:20) How crazy amazing is that!? You can pray or have one of your kiddoes pray.
Thank Him for this time to gather together and ask Him to open your hearts to receive whatever He has for you.
Worship
After you have all settled in and focused your hearts and minds on the Lord, it’s time for family worship. Let your kids be involved with choosing what to sing. We have been singing “We Three Kings” for 11 months now because it is our 4-year-olds favorite.
Some other family favorites include:
By our Love – For King and Country
In the Eye of the Storm – Ryan Stevenson
Jesus Loves Me
Ezekiel and the Dry Bones
Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho
We Three Kings
Go Tell it on the Mountain
Our absolute favorites are Hymns such as the Come thou Fount of Every Blessing, The Blessing of Aaron, and It is Well with My Soul.
We use this book often to learn a new Hymn and to dig in deeper to the ones we already love!
The Word
After worship, dig into the Bible together. If you have never done this before, start with Genesis 1:1 – right at the beginning! The creation story is easy to read through and fun to talk about even with little ones.
You can also start in Matthew with the gospel of Jesus. Bust out the leftover candy canes and celebrate that Jesus is Emanuel- God with us! You can celebrate any time of year.
As we have been having family Church meetings, we have gone through a lot of the Bible together. Sometimes one child’s question will prompt our Bible readings. We will study one person, one character quality, or one book of the Bible. Other times, we follow a devotional book that was made for children.
Tried and True Resources
This book was a gift from my sweet cousin, and we LOVE it! It goes through the Bible story by story, book by book and breaks things down in a child-friendly manner without watering down the truth.
It points all of scripture to Christ with a “Christ Connection” section. This Bible storybook also is broken down into short, easy to read through stories that can be used with multiple ages.

We have enjoyed going through this book as a family too! I love that every lesson has questions, a hymn, and a prayer prompt. All of the verses are in KJV though, so I usually translate into ESV so my kiddoes can better understand what ‘s being said.

We haven’t made it all the way through this book yet, but it starts with Jesus’ birth (Christmas in July anyone??) and is super great as a daily family Church meeting resource.
