A lone loaf of bread was left. A single loaf inbetween row after row of empty shelf. It looked more like Walmart was going out of business than a typical Tuesday shopping trip.
I watched on elderly woman pick up the lonesome cinnamon raisin and put it down three times. The third she really studied the loaf, looked it over from top to bottom, and shoved it back on the shelf.
I think it’s time we remember how to make our own bread instead of relying on the grocery isle to provide. If not for our own sake, then for our family and our elderly neighbors!
Ever Made Bread Before?
Don’t know a grain mill from a grinder? This post is for you!
Confession – I have spent years trying to make a decent loaf of bread. You know, the kind of bread that rises and people actually want to eat? That was a hard-fought battle because of one of my children needing to be gluten-free.
BUT, with all of my trial and error, I have found a really foolproof recipe that doesn’t need to rise (can I get an Amen!).
Unleavened or Flat Bread Recipe
My family LOVES this bread recipe. We eat it after Passover/Easter during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. But truly my family enjoys it all year round.
It is great for dipping in soups or sauces, or for spreading nut butter on top of. You can whip it up in a hurry and its so easy that kids can make it by themselves (with a little instruction of course 😉 ).
To top it off, ours is gluten and dairy free! But it can also be made with regular flour, butter, and milk if that is what you have on hand.
Stuff you Need
1 cup almond milk (or regular cow milk)
3 cups gluten free flour blend (or plain ol’ flour)
1/2 cup of coconut oil (or dairy filled butter)
4 Tbs honey
1 tsp salt
What to Do
Melt the coconut oil (or butter) if needed. Mix all ingredients in a bowl until blended. Roll the dough out flat on a greased or parchment paper covered cookie sheet. We have used a can of food in a baggie as a rolling pin for this before we owned one.
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 375 degrees. You can cut it with a pizza cutter or sharp knife and enjoy!
If you want something that rises, check out these other bread recipes that actually work – and your family won’t break a tooth on 😉
Gluten-Free Challah or Braided Bread
You can find instructions for our favorite homemade gluten-free bread HERE. It is a bit more complicated, but if I can do it – anyone can haha 😉
We don’t add any toppings, and you can either braid the dough or bake it in a regular bread pan or muffin tin.
Regular (Gluten-filled) Sandwhich Bread
I used to use a recipe similar to this before we had to be gluten free. It won’t work with gluten-free flour (ask me how I know haha!) but it’s simple to make if you are a regular flour family!
