Why Homeschooling Cost me 4.5 Million dollars
Yes you read that number right. It’s an unfathomable number, yet if I am being honest it makes my stomach hurt when I think about it too much.
You see, 4.5 Million dollars is the amount of money I was projected to bring home from my college educated, well-to-do career. The one I am still paying off student loan debt for. 4.5 Million dollars is the amount the financial advisor said I would make. I double checked her calculations and she was right. Scary right. She was also correct in letting me know that I was walking away from 4.5 Million dollars when we made the decision for me to stay home and homeschool our kiddoes. 4.5 Million dollars.
Is homeschooling worth that?
What has homeschooling cost you? Because there is always a cost when the Lord tells us to do something, otherwise He wouldn’t have to tell us. If there were no cost to count, it would be something that comes easily for us. We would likely be doing it anyway. It wouldn’t need saying. He wouldn’t have to ask.
I thought I would skirt the system; have my cake and eat it too. I could work part-time and homeschool my children. One weekend’s wages were enough to pay all of my family’s living expenses. A few days a month and we were secure AND could easily homeschool. But that wasn’t what the Lord had for us for long, and all part-time employees were laid off. 4.5 Million dollars. Did I say that already? Is homeschooling worth it?
But He promises to take our worries upon Himself. The maker of the universe wants us to cast our cares on Him. Jesus tells us that worrying won’t add a single hour to our lives, so why on earth do we waste our time with it? Why am I worried about things that will pass away? 4.5 Million won’t matter on the other side of eternity, but my obedience will. What I taught my children will matter. The time I spent pouring into them will have eternal impact. Is homeschooling worth it?
What has homeschooling cost you?
So while homeschooling is costing me more money than I can justify, my Father, the owner of the cattle on 1,000 hills has asked me to do it. And, if we are being completely honest, I am gaining so much more than I knew possible from it.
Homeschooling pays in baby belly laughs, and sweet snuggly moments of escaping into stories. It reaps dividends of heart-swelling pride when your child reads his first chapter book or your daughter spouts off random wisdom well beyond her years and you think to yourself: I taught them that! Lord, look what you did through me! Is homeschooling worth it?
Homeschooling paychecks are cashed in a contented heart that falls into bed each evening, as you witness all the Lord is doing in their lives. As you are required to be completely, utterly, increasingly desperately dependent upon His strength and His knowledge and His wisdom to raise these precious little ones, you come to realize that He asked you to homeschool for you. For your sinful self.
Because you would have never known Him the way that homeschooling pushes you to know Him. You would have never walked alongside Him the way that homeschooling requires you to. You would have never handed everything over, to the One whom it all belongs to anyways if you were so busy making your 4.5 Million dollars. Is homeschooling worth it?
What has homeschooling cost you?
You would have been busy chasing what the World deems as extreme success all while your soul slipped through your fingers. While their souls steeped in the folly wisdom of the world and your pockets grew thicker and your house grew larger. And you never knew you needed to depend on Him.
Homeschooling requires me to depend on Him for strength to get up in the morning and keep going. For wisdom in my parenting. To daily seek Him in ways I didn’t know I needed Him. Is homeschooling worth it?
And, if we are being honest, I wouldn’t ever in a million years trade 4.5 Million dollars for what homeschooling has taught me when all I had set out to do was to teach them.
Homeschooling is worth so much more than 4.5 million dollars.
