Keeping the Bible at the center of your homeschool should be a top priority. In Deuteronomy 6 God gives a clear Bible command to PARENTS, to diligently teach God’s Word to their children when they walk, sit, rise up, or lay down. So pretty much, we should be teaching God’s Word to our children all the time and making it a part of our daily training and instruction.
There are some common reasons Why We Neglect Teaching God’s Word To Our Children, but failing to be purposeful and intentional about keeping the Bible at the center, is probably the biggest reason we fail in this area.
How can you keep God’s Word at the center of your homeschool?
1. Start the day with His Word.
As parents, we need to spend time in God’s Word daily. We also need to read it to or with our kids, and then encourage them to start reading it on their own as soon as they are able.
Don’t think that the Bible won’t interest your kids.
As soon as they start learning phonics, get them excited about the fact that pretty soon they will be able to read God’s Word all by themselves, just like Mommy & Daddy.
Make sure they have a Bible reading plan they will enjoy, so they will look forward to their daily Bible reading. (BIBLE READING PLANS YOUR CHILDREN WILL ENJOY)
There are so many ways you can get them excited about it, as long as YOU are!
For one practical and fun idea, read my post Purposeful Celebrations With Our Children, and see how we got our kids excited about reading their Bible ALL the way through.
2. Sing Scripture before your meals.
I have to say that there is something so sweet about hearing your children sing God’s Word as they work and play!
It not only helps them learn it, but it helps their attitude. It’s one of the simplest ways to teach your kids God’s Word, and singing it will help them retain it for much longer.
3. Memorize God’s Word together.
TOGETHER is the key to making this more fun.
- Do motions
- Make pictures
- Say them with expression
- Make it fun and exciting
By the way, don’t be afraid to start young. Your three and four year old will surprise you with their ability to memorize. By the time our oldest son was five, he had learned over three hundred verses in passages of as little as six verses, and up to as many as twenty-four verses.
4. Apply the Bible to everyday situations that come up.
One example of this is when your children are mistreated by a sibling or friend. Show them what God’s Word says to do: love them and pray for them.
When you’re outside and see a beautiful bird, talk about the story of creation from Genesis.
When you are working around the home, remind them that God says to do everything without complaining.
There are so many situations daily that you can take advantage of, to point your kids to God’s Word, and teach them what it says about that situation.
5. Use God’s Word throughout the day for training and correction.
I talked about this in my post Who Has Time to Be Spiritual?! so I won’t go into detail on it again here, but will just remind you how important it is to train and correct their heart with Scripture.
What an opportunity it is to take our kids to God’s Word when they show wrong behavior, and show them what God says about it. Training & Correcting the Heart With Scripture is an easy to use resource to help you consistently correct your kids with Scripture.
Don’t look at those times of correction as an interruption to your school day or your plans, but rather as an OPPORTUNITY to point your kids to God’s Word.
6. Use God’s Word for teaching Godly character to your children.
Godly character is simply being Christ-like, and the way to teach that to your children is by going to God’s Word and looking at what it says about it. Character training should be a part of your daily morning routine, as it is another great way to point your kids to God’s Word, while training their hearts.
