Slump Survival Strategies for your Home
When we enter the homeschool slump, it seems like everything falls by the wayside. Every system that I had in place and was working to keep our home, homeschool, and life in order suddenly falls apart. I am left standing next to my laundry pile in my fuzzy bathrobe while the kids are bouncing off the walls just wondering what happened to our day!
This is why I need some slump survival strategies to manage my home. When slump season comes, everything changes. Being prepared to let my perfectionist ideas go, and streamlining our systems for slump survival has been such a blessing this slump season.
Laundry
First of all, let’s talk laundry. The mountains of laundry that get backed up during the slump is enough to make a mama move out of her own home. For our family of 5 (and another on the way!) we need to do a load of laundry a day to avoid the mountain. However, when you are in the slump simply getting through math for the week can be a challenge. So while we need clean clothes to survive, we don’t have to do them every day.
I have found that by letting the laundry accumulate throughout the week AND NOT WORRYING ABOUT IT, we can better focus our limited supply of time, energy, and patience on homeschooling. Then on a weekend when dad can be there to help, we can wash, dry, fold, and put away MOVE the laundry mountain we have created as a team.

Meal Planning
I am a big fan of monthly meal planning. I can do it once, which saves time and money on our grocery bill. But when you are in the thick of the slump and you are needing some slump survival strategies for your home, now is not the time to grocery shop and freezer cook for the next 6 months or plan out 30 new recipes to try. You still need a plan, but we will keep this simple!
Think of 15 meals your family enjoys eating, and plan to eat them twice. Make a quick list of what you will need for that or if you have already made your master grocery list (FREE printable here!) you can just follow that. This will allow you to only make two grocery shopping runs this month, and you can spend the rest of your time and energy focused on homeschooling your kiddoes, without running out of food or staring into the freezer abyss at 5 o’clock wondering what you will feed your hungry crew.

House Keeping
There are two very simple rules involved in slump survival strategies for your home when it comes to housekeeping.
1) If it doesn’t NEED to be done and
2) If it won’t make you crazy to leave it undone, then
DON’T WASTE TIME DOING IT!
Sometimes I get caught up in wanting my house to be spotless and picture perfect. I want this for good reasons: my family to live in a nice, clean home and so that we are able to warmly welcome guests that happen by. The slump is not the time for this. It is time to hunker down and survive. So anything that doesn’t need to be done for cleanliness or your sanity, goes.
For example: walking on unvacuumed carpet drives me nuts. We have dogs that shed and a toddler that shreds random things and drops snacks. Letting go of the vacuuming is never worth it for me. But we can live with crumbs in the fridge until the slump passes and everyone feels better. Do what works for you, and forget the pressure you feel to do what works for everyone else!
