“It’s the worst math curriculum we have ever used! Totally wasted a year!”
Gasp! Two other mamas were bashing a math curriculum at co-op. But this was not just any old math curriculum on the market – oh no – this was our math curriculum.
The more they talked, the worse it sounded. That sinking feeling in my stomach won’t leave.
Then the What-if’s Begin
Is it really that bad of a curriculum?
If it held all their kid’s back in mathematics and wasted a whole year of their time, should we be using it?
Maybe my own kids are behind in math and we don’t realize it!
What if it doesn’t teach them the skills they need for college!?
What if it doesn’t teach them the skills they need for life!?
Their math curriculum is obviously the enemy!
–> We neeeed to look into other curriculums stat before our math curriculum ruins their entire education, chances of getting into college, getting a career, or succeeding in life!!!
Our whole homeschool system needs an overhaul!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After days hours of deliberate stewing over a math curriculum that I no longer had any faith in, I brought the idea of a new math curriculum up to my husband. As I explained my reasoning out loud, I realized how silly I sounded.
If it’s Not Broken, Why Fix it?
You see, we have a math curriculum we love. We all enjoy using it, and it is super easy to teach different children on different levels.
To top it all off, I am pretty good with numbers.
I was a math tutor in school, once had a math teacher tell me I would make a lot of money counting cards at a blackjack table in Vegas, and aced every math through calculus- so if I think it’s a decent math program, why am I ready to burn it in the backyard?
Because someone other mom, who didn’t even know I was listening, said it was horrible – and I bought it as truth. If it’s not broken, why would we waste time and precious, limited homeschool mama sanity trying to fix it?

The Biggest Homeschool Curriculum Mistake
You see friend, that’s the biggest homeschool curriculum mistake you can ever make: comparison without reason.
It is one thing to ask another homeschooling mom’s opinion on a curriculum. We all need a mom who has been at this homeschooling gig longer than we have to glean wisdom from!
It is entirely terrible another thing to compare our homeschool curriculum to the mama across the homeschool co-op lunch table. Especially when we have researched a curriculum, purchased it, and it is working well for our own family.
So, what is a tired homeschool mama to do when she starts questioning her curriculum due to the biggest homeschool curriculum mistake: comparison without reason?
Put on some good, old fashioned, homeschool mom curriculum blinders!
Or you can always plug your ears and walk away while loudly humming skip counting songs to yourself. That’s a great way to make TONS of homeschool mom friends at co-op too 😉
