The Easy Way to add Foreign Language to Your Morning Basket
Jampacked. It seems like there are more good things to do in our homeschools than hours in the day! Morning basket it a way we can cover the beautiful things that bring joy before getting caught up in the chaos of the day.
We often use morning basket time to bask in subjects that are lovely, good, and beautiful. These include Bible story or study, hymns, poetry, missionary studies, and even fun math read-alouds. My children will tell you that it is one of their favorite parts of homeschooling!
Foreign Language is a subject that is also beautiful and lovely, but it was a subject that we talked about doing and never did. We covered some fundamental Latin memory work from Classical Conversations in our homeschool, but we had not successfully implemented studying a foreign language deeply.
I want my children to know not only how to read, write, and speak a different language than the English that is their native tongue but to know how to learn another language. On top of having the skills necessary to learn a language, I want them to enjoy learning a language and for them to see the beauty of the languages and cultures that God has allowed on the earth.
The only way we were ever going to fit in foreign language studies is to include it in our morning basket and get it in early in the day.
How exactly does one do foreign language during morning basket time? Check out how we are doing it below!
The Easy Way to add Foreign Language to Your Morning Basket
Step one – Use a Family Friendly Curriculum
We are currently using Hebrew for Homeschoolers in our morning basket. We are learning how to read, write, and speak Hebrew as a family! It is a curriculum that is completely open and go (or should I say log-in and go? ;)) It is an online class that meets once a week for 10 weeks.
We usually watch the video together once a week when it works for our schedule (the classes are live, but there is always a replay available). This gives me the skills necessary to cover foreign language as a teacher, without knowing a foreign language from the get-go.
Step two – Choose Morning Basket Tools
Once you have learned the simple words and facts about the language you are studying, it is easy to implement foreign language into your morning time. Find some fun books to read together that allow you to learn new words. The First Thousand Words books are great for many languages you may want to study, like Hebrew, Latin, Spanish, French, German, Italian, or even Mandarin! (They are internet linked so you can hear the pronunciation!)
You can also use some flash cards during your morning basket to review what you are learning. These flashcards look like a lot of fun! Those resources cover reading the language. You will also want to take a few moments to speak the language together. We are greeting each other appropriately in Hebrew, and then talking over whatever we are learning for the week (colors, foods, people in our family, etc..) This really brings joy to foreign language learning and to our morning time!
Step three – Celebrate!
You are having fun enjoying foreign language learning as a family AND you are successfully practicing it daily by adding a foreign language to your morning basket! Have a party complete with culturally appropriate music, foods, and customs.
